MICRONEEDLING

Microneedling is a minimally invasive and practically painless technique for skin rejuvenation.

After applying topical numbing cream, an aesthetician gently glides a microneedling device over the treatment areas, creating thousands of tiny micro-channels to kickstart natural collagen production. These controlled micro-injuries “trick” the skin to begin repairing itself.

The repair process releases fibroblasts and growth factors,

stimulating the production of fresh collagen and elastin: two essential elements of plump, luminous skin. As dermal and epidermal thickness increases, the skin texture also improves. You’ll notice reduced pore size, fine lines, scars, and discoloration.

At Upper West Spa, we use the top-of the-line Exceed™ microneedling device, designed by Candela to treat facial wrinkles and reduce acne scarring. Exceed™ is the first FDA-cleared medical microneedling system, and it’s also the only microneedling device with a patented cartridge. The cartridge contains a tilting plate that adjusts to your facial contours, allowing access to hard-to reach areas. From the plate, the needles release smoothly and quickly into the skin.

To minimize epidermal trauma, these needles adjust to your facial contours as they glide laterally across the skin. Other microneedling devices feature a fixed handpiece and only move up and down, which can cause a dragging sensation and scratching, also known as “tracking.” Unlike some facial rejuvenation procedures that use heat, light or lasers, our microneedling process does not pose any risk of skin discoloration.

After each microneedling session, the natural process of skin repair continues for a few months. This procedure is also safer for certain skin types than fractional resurfacing, which creates micro-channels by applying laser heat. We recommend a series of 4 to 5 treatments per year to boost collagen production, or a more intense series of 8 to 10 treatments spaced every 4 to 6 weeks to improve acne scars, deeper discoloration, and/or fine lines.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling:

1. What does microneedling actually do?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive anti-aging procedure. During the treatment, the aesthetician uses a device with thin needles to create micro-channels in the skin. These controlled injuries stimulate the skin’s natural healing process, prompting the natural production of collagen and elastin. After healing, the skin will look firmer, smoother, and more luminous.

2. Is microneedling good for your skin?

Microneedling is a very safe and effective way to improve your skin’s appearance. It reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and scarring, and aids in discoloration while rejuvenating the skin.

3. How painful is microneedling?

Microneedling treatments are comfortable and minimally invasive. We apply numbing cream before the treatments, so clients do not feel any pain and experience minimal discomfort.

4. Is there any downside to microneedling?

Like most cosmetic procedures, microneedling requires some downtime. Immediately after the procedure, clients most commonly report mild skin irritation. You may also experience some redness for a couple days, followed by mild skin peeling on the third day after treatment.
